The effects of light.
As an artist who spends many hours painting outside, one of the challenges, as well as exciting aspects of plein air landscape painting, is capturing the varying effects of light.
As I constantly remind my students, outside light changes every second. So, one must paint quickly. As Claude Monet once said, "Nature does not stand still."
Painting outdoors forces an artist to think quickly and decisively.
The park close to me now is Bayonne Park, a beautiful park in New Jersey, where I can walk to and paint outside in peaceful surroundings. The two pavilions in the park lately have caught my attention, as I admire the Italianesque design and symmetry. Lately, I have been drawn to the light effects on buildings.
My portable watercolor set is invaluable to me, especially for quick watercolor drawings. It's looking well used lately!
During my most recent outing, I had to quickly capture the moment before rain clouds appeared overhead. Again, nature does not care if you're painting or not, and fighting nature is part of the game.
Coming back yet again, I decided to capture evening light, whose effect lasted about a half hour or so.
Who knows? I may come back soon for an attempt at an oil painting by evening.
